*Term 3*

Today we were treated to an exciting ball drop by one of the school contractors, Shade Systems! They made the large shade canopies over the two courts. A large sack of balls were hoisted up by a crane and then released all at once, with every student getting to rush on to the field and take a ball home for themselves.

SCHOOL CLOSES AT 2PM ON WEDNESDAY FOR PARENT INTERVIEWS

Olympic fever is about to start!
Fonterra Milk for Schools is running a Nationwide competition. In the month of August, New Zealand athletes are hiding under specially marked packs of Anchor 2L milk.

We need to collect these and add them to our posters hanging in the classroom! The poster has 15 spaces to hold all 15 collectible labels.

Every label also has a unique code. If this code is entered at Anchor.co.nz you will receive an Olympic scenario, for example, if the Men's Rugby Sevens team win a gold medal, you will win a $100 gift card!

Welcome back to school for Term 3
We hope you had a great break over the holidays and didn’t get too cold and wet! We welcome a number of Chinese students to our syndicate who are at Matipo for one or two weeks. We hope you enjoy our school!
We’re still in winter so please make sure your children are dressed for the weather. Like last term, it’s good to wear layers and also have a change of clothes in your child’s school bag just in case they get wet or muddy.

 Brain Food - We will continue using Brain Food during the day - they will be allowed to snack on fruit (fresh or dried) & nuts, and drink water in class. ( No sweets, artificial drinks, or fizz )
 Homework – Each class has a different type of homework so check with your child’s class teacher for any home learning.
 Don’t forget to continue with the 40 Book Challenge.
 Remember we have a Syndicate Page on the Matipokids website which will also link to a
class page. All important dates and information will be on the syndicate page with information relating to each class on their class pages.
 As we come into the second half of the year, we are still expecting the children in year 6 to become more independent and take on responsibility. Please foster this independence by giving your child jobs to do at home and expecting them to do things for themselves.
 Language - The students’ reading and written language will be tailored to their
individual levels, with the reading groups using a range of suitable texts and
encouragement to use the library. As always, we strongly encourage regular reading
practice at home. This term we are focusing on writing narrative texts. There will be a
story writing competition this term with entries due in by the 16 th September
 Mathematics – We are continuing to follow the Prime Mathematics system in our cross grouped classes.
 Inquiry – This term our topic is ‘I Am A Designer/Inventor’. Each class will be making a
product to sell at the whole school Market Day on the 20th September. Watch this space!
 Sport - This term the sports field days will be: Swimming (2nd August), Rugby (16th August)
 Other Term Three dates –
o Individual Photographs – 3 rd August
o Reports emailed home – 5 th August
o Parent Interviews – 10 th August
o Australian Maths Test – 16 th August
o Daffodil Day – 26 th August
o Dance Concert – 14 th September
o Learning Expo – 22 nd September

There will no doubt be other dates for activities which are yet to be confirmed. These will be sent home in separate newsletters. You can also check the dates on the syndicate and class websites.

Remember, you as parents/guardians are the most important educators in your child’s life. Fostering a working partnership between teachers and parents is hugely beneficial. We are available by email individually through the addresses shown above if you have any questions or feedback. If you have any concerns at all, please contact the class teacher first.
Please do not hesitate to contact us at any time during the year if you have any queries or concerns.

Have a great term!
